Audubon Society Buys 182 Acres for $275,000

A chunk of land near Novato that once was destined to be a dump was purchased at a bargain price by the Marin County Audubon Society.
The 182 acres near the Redwood Landfill was bought from Waste Management Inc. for $275,000 -- half its assessed value.
The Audubon Society says 100 acres will be restored to tidal marsh like the adjacent 2,000-acre Petaluma Marsh, the largest tidelands marsh in the state.
The rest of the acreage already is marshland.
The goal of the marsh restoration project is to restore diked land to a functioning tidal marsh to benefit the endangered California clapper rail, steelhead, salmon and other native fish and birds.
The marsh restoration project is expected to begin next week and will be completed in phases over several years.
