Breathed’s back

I was shocked and thrilled to open my newspaper last Saturday and discover that Berkeley Breathed was returning to comics (“Stand-up Comics,” by David L. Ulin, Nov. 22)! And even more thrilled to see my beloved Opus on the comics page the next morning. I’ve missed both of them so much.
And I agree completely with Breathed’s assessment of some of the junk on the comics pages. My hit list includes “Garfield,” “Peanuts,” “Momma,” “Drabble,” “Cathy,” “Heathcliff,” “Dennis the Menace,” “Family Circus,” “Blondie” and “Marmaduke.” These strips all have fallen into one or more of the fatal sins of cartooning: not funny, old and tired, not relevant and/or repetitive.

I read the interview in which Berkeley Breathed told of his own genius, and how Charles Schulz went into a decline with “Peanuts.” Boy, was I overwhelmed.
I read his new strip “Opus” on Sunday. Boy, was I underwhelmed.
