Cowan F. “Bubba” Hyde, 95, an outfielder in the Negro Leagues whose career spanned four decades, died Thursday in St. Louis after a brief illness.
Hyde was among the first players honored in 1997 on the Negro League Wall of Fame in Milwaukee.
He played for more than a dozen teams, beginning with the Memphis Red Sox in 1927.
Hyde spent most of his time with Memphis, where he also played from 1938 to 1950.
While a member of the Memphis team, he was twice named to the East-West All Star Team.
Hyde, who also played second base, had a brief tryout with the then-Boston Braves in 1950, but was cut after he left camp to be with his wife during childbirth.
Hyde eventually continued his career in Canada, Cuba and the Dominican Republic.
