Mexican Envoy Resigns Ahead of Termination

Mexico’s U.N. ambassador, Adolfo Aguilar Zinser, stepped down ahead of his expected firing at the end of the year, saying it was impossible to remain after his comments on U.S.-Mexican relations sparked a diplomatic flap.
Aguilar Zinser said last week that “unfortunately, the understanding that the political and intellectual class of the United States has of Mexico is a country whose position is that of a backyard.”
The remarks prompted sharp rebuttals from Secretary of State Colin L. Powell and Mexican President Vicente Fox.
