A pilot who was killed Friday when his experimental aircraft crashed in rural Saticoy has been identified as Russ Cathaway, 85, of Ventura.
A witness told authorities that the red single-engine aircraft was flying west at a low altitude when Cathaway turned the plane around and started flying toward Santa Paula Airport.
About 3:30 p.m. Cathaway’s plane hit a hill next to the Santa Clara River, east of Los Angeles Avenue, and flipped over on top of him.
