Responsible Use of Handicapped Placards

Re “The Ins and Outs of Handicapped Parking,†letter, May 10: A letter writer said that those renewing handicapped placards should at some point be required to obtain disabled plates. Many people with disabilities must ride with others and need to carry their placards with them whether they own a car or not. We have our daughter’s placard in our car even though she has disabled plates on her vehicle because she sometimes rides with us, as does my sister, who brings her own placard.

We would never think of using the placard for ourselves so that we can park in a space for handicapped people. I only wish others who use those spaces illegally would think about those who really need them and, also, the very large fine they may receive for breaking the law.
