Victims of the worst civilian massacre in Europe since World War II are getting a proper burial.

After forensic experts identified them, the remains of 600 Bosnian Muslims killed by Serbs at Srebrenica in 1995 are being returned to the site of the massacre for burial.

An estimated 15,000 people lined the streets Friday in this northern Bosnian town as four trucks carrying the first of the remains crawled through town.

Tears rolled down the face of one survivor, Sevala Alic, 69, as she touched one of the slowly moving trucks. “My son, Sahbaz, and my grandson, Alem, are somewhere on these trucks,†Alic said.

Up to 8,000 Muslims, mostly boys and men, were slaughtered at Srebrenica by Bosnian Serb soldiers who overran the town, then a U.N.-protected zone.
