Foster, Adoptive Parents Would Undergo Checks

Prospective foster and adoptive parents would have to undergo criminal background checks under legislation against child abuse that was passed by the House on a voice vote.
The bill, which reauthorizes the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act, is designed to protect children and the victims of family violence.
The Senate passed a similar bill last week and the two will have to be reconciled before heading to the White House.
The legislation would require states to run criminal background checks on prospective foster and adoptive parents.
