General Dynamics Corp. and Northrop Grumman Corp. are competing for a Navy contract estimated to be worth $4.2 billion to build a new kind of vessel designed to defend coastal regions and ports.
The littoral combat ship would be a stealth vessel that would be smaller and faster than destroyer and frigates.
