CyberRays Can’t Stop the Spirit
SAN DIEGO — Aly Wagner and Julie Fleeting scored goals to rally the San Diego Spirit to a 2-1 victory Sunday night over the San Jose CyberRays in front of 6,220 in a Women’s United Soccer Assn. game filled with cautions and ejections.
Both teams had players ejected in the first half.
In the fifth minute, San Diego’s Joy Fawcett pulled down Keri Sanchez during an offensive push by the CyberRays (5-7-1). Fawcett was red-carded.
Sissi converted the resulting free kick from 20 yards that sailed left of the defensive wall and eluded diving goalie Jenni Branam into the left corner.
San Jose’s Pretinha was given a second yellow card and ejected during first-half injury time because of a disagreement with the referee. She had received another in the 24th minute for undercutting.
Wagner then converted a 19-yard free kick over the CyberRay defensive wall and past goalie LaKeysia Beene to tie the score at 1-1.
In the second half, San Diego (5-3-4) took a 2-1 lead when Fleeting kicked a 12-yard shot past an onrushing Beene.
