Webb Puts Arizona Win Streak at 10
Brandon Webb grounded the Detroit Tigers.
The rookie right-hander threw a seven-hitter and Luis Gonzalez drove in three runs, and Arizona won a franchise-record 10th consecutive game by beating the Tigers, 7-0, Saturday night at Detroit.
The Tigers, who have lost eight in a row and 20 of 22, hit only four balls in the air against Webb in his first complete game in 11 major league starts. Webb (4-2) struck out two, walked one and got 21 groundball outs, including a game-ending double play.
“You better bring your infield gloves when Webby’s pitching,†Arizona Manager Bob Brenly said. “That was quite an exhibition of a groundball pitcher throwing lots of groundballs and the infield ready to make the plays behind him.â€
Jeremy Bonderman (2-12) gave up five runs -- three earned -- and seven hits in six innings.
“He had a quality start and pitched well enough to win. We let him down,†Manager Alan Trammell said. “Every time we play really sloppy, it really ticks me off. I have to watch my mouth.â€
The Diamondbacks took a 3-0 lead in the third on Alex Cintron’s run-scoring single and Gonzalez’s two-run single.
Arizona scored two unearned runs in the sixth.
After Sanchez dropped Cintron’s leadoff fly for a two-base error, Gonzalez made it 4-0 with a double into the right-field corner. Carlos Baerga made it 5-0 with a sacrifice fly.
Chad Moeller hit a two-run double in the ninth against Wil Ledezman to complete the scoring.
Arizona shortstop Tony Womack had to be helped off the field after spraining his knee in the fifth inning. After throwing out A.J. Hinch on a chopper between shortstop and the mound, Womack collapsed, writhing and screaming in pain, and grabbing the back of his right knee.
He will fly to Phoenix for an MRI exam today. The Diamondbacks put Womack on the 15-day disabled list.
