Troops Beat Protesters at Opposition Rally

Troops fired guns and tear gas and beat demonstrators as the opposition launched a week of strikes and protests aimed at forcing President Robert Mugabe to step down. Police rounded up dozens of leaders and supporters of the Movement for Democratic Change.
Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai was arrested but later released. No deaths were reported.
