Sabathia Feels Right at Home in Victory

C.C. Sabathia pitched seven innings for his first victory in nearly four weeks, Angel Santos hit his first major league home run and the Cleveland Indians defeated the Oakland Athletics, 4-2, Wednesday night.

Sabathia (9-6) gave up nine hits, two runs and walked one to help the Indians end a five-game losing streak at Oakland.

The 22-year-old left-hander, a native of nearby Vallejo, outpitched Ted Lilly (6-9), who gave up six hits and struck out five in seven innings. Lilly lost for the fourth time in five decisions.

Santos homered to left field in the fifth inning. The former Red Sox prospect, acquired this month in a trade, was promoted to the majors nine days ago.

Scott Hatteberg had a run-scoring double and Erubiel Durazo hit a sacrifice fly, but the A’s couldn’t string together any rallies.

They made several blunders in their second home game after a 12-game trip.

Seattle 13, Detroit 3 -- Randy Winn had his first two-home run game, including a grand slam, and drove in a career-high six runs at Seattle.

Winn hit his slam and John Olerud had a three-run homer in a nine-run first inning, the Mariners’ biggest inning since they scored 10 runs at Chicago on May 2, 2002.

Jamie Moyer (14-5) won his fourth consecutive decision and the Mariners opened a four-game lead over second-place Oakland in the West Division.

Nate Cornejo (5-9) retired only two batters and gave up nine runs and seven hits, but six runs were unearned because of an error by third baseman Dmitri Young.

Texas 9, Boston 2 -- Laynce Nix, Mark Teixeira and Hank Blalock homered, and Nix drove in four runs at Arlington, Texas.

Robert Ellis (1-1) gave up two runs and six hits in seven-plus innings for his first victory since June 16, 2001.

Minnesota 5, Baltimore 1 -- Brad Radke (7-9) won for only the second time in 13 starts, taking a four-hit shutout into the eighth inning at Minneapolis.

Jacque Jones had three runs batted in to help the Twins move to within 5 1/2 games of first-place Kansas City in the Central Division.

Tampa Bay 5, Toronto 3 -- Jeff Liefer, recalled earlier in the day from the minor leagues, hit a two-run homer against Cory Lidle (11-9) in the fourth inning at Toronto, putting the Devil Rays ahead, 4-3.
