The Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to oppose a state ballot measure that would stop the state and local governments from collecting most kinds of racial and ethnic information.

On a motion by Supervisor Yvonne Brathwaite Burke, the board voted 4 to 1 to take an official position against the initiative, which is sponsored by University of California Regent Ward Connerly. Supervisor Mike Antonovich voted against Burke’s motion.

The initiative, Proposition 54, will be on the Oct. 7 ballot, along with the proposed recall of Gov. Gray Davis.
