‘Lion King’ tallies tickets

“The Lion King” grossed $142,249,930 in its run at the Pantages Theatre, which ended last Sunday after 933 regular performances and 19 previews. Total attendance was 2,311,397.
Those figures weren’t big enough to make the show the king of L.A.’s theatrical box office. That title still belongs to “The Phantom of the Opera,” which in its 1989-1993 run at the Ahmanson Theatre grossed $155,765,470.
Any comparisons of the two must note that the run of “Phantom” was about twice as long, its tickets cost about half as much, and the Ahmanson has fewer seats than the Pantages.
