Panel Votes to Defy Some Federal Security Laws

After hearing from noted peace activist Daniel Ellsberg and more than 100 others, the Fairfax Town Council voted 4 to 1 to defy some of the new federal security laws, citing fears that they violate basic civil liberties.
Ellsberg, the onetime Defense Department analyst who leaked the Pentagon Papers to the New York Times, told the council Tuesday that laws passed in the wake of the Sept. 11 terror attacks infringe on rights that protected him as he voiced opposition to the Vietnam War.
