Warner Names James Cardwell as Home Video Chief

Warner Bros. on Wednesday promoted James Cardwell to succeed ousted home video czar Warren N. Lieberfarb.
The studio also said the video unit will report to Warner President Alan Horn. The unit previously reported directly to studio Chairman Barry Meyer.
Cardwell worked at Warner’s video division for 20 years, most recently as executive vice president for North America and Australia. As president of the unit, he will oversee Warner’s DVD and video sales, video-on-demand and other areas.
Lieberfarb, regarded as the godfather of Hollywood’s lucrative DVD business, was forced out last month amid growing tensions with his bosses at Warner Bros. and at parent AOL Time Warner Inc.
Lieberfarb’s departure came after sweeping changes he proposed were rejected. He also complained that he had not been adequately compensated for building the DVD business, and that his stock options were worthless because AOL Time Warner’s shares have tumbled.
