French tenor Roberto Alagna has received a visa just in time to step in for Placido Domingo in Los Angeles Opera’s “Concert of Passion and Poetry,” Saturday through Jan. 19 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.
The appearance will mark the Los Angeles debut of Alagna, who lives in Paris. Domingo was forced to cancel because of a severe bronchial infection, but he will conduct Act IV of Verdi’s “Otello” in the three-part program, which also includes excerpts from Massenet’s “Werther” and Monteverdi’s “Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda.”
Alagna will sing Otello and Massenet’s Werther opposite Frederica von Stade in the role of Charlotte. Kent Nagano will conduct the Massenet and Monteverdi’s scores.
