A retired professor was killed Thursday after an unknown assailant fired a gun into his home, authorities said.
Police said that the man, who was not identified, was in his house on Mountain High Road about 7 p.m. when bullets whizzed through the residence. A woman, believed to be his wife, was not injured.
The man was hit at least once and died a short time later at a hospital.
Police said they did not know whether the man was targeted or the victim of an accidental or random shooting.
Detectives were on the scene late Thursday night trying to piece together what had happened.
Authorities did not release the couple’s names pending notification of relatives.
