Re “Bush Ally Is Top Contender for Nomination to Supreme Court,” Dec. 30: I was perturbed when I read: “from a childhood home without hot running water, to Harvard Law School, to the White House.” What does the lack of hot running water have to do with the abilities of Alberto Gonzales? Such inconveniences have not hindered a vast majority of people since the founding of the U.S. Indoor plumbing became standard just in the early 1900s.
