Police Seek Suspect in Foiled Bank Robbery

Beverly Hills police were still searching Saturday for a bank robber whose accomplice was killed in a Valentine’s Day shootout with security guards.

The two allegedly tried to hold up a Washington Mutual branch at the corner of Wilshire and La Cienega boulevards about 5 p.m. Friday, police said. The bank had been the target of three other attempted heists in recent months, and bank officials had bolstered security by posting plainclothes guards, said Lt. Mitch McCann of the Beverly Hills Police Department.

At least 16 shots were fired in the shootout, leaving one robber dead. The other, who fled the scene, is described as African American, 20 to 25 years old, about 6 feet tall and 175 to 180 pounds. He was wearing a white shirt and a gray jacket and what looked like a dark, curly wig, McCann said.
