Justices Block Smoking Ban in Tobacco Country

The state Supreme Court blocked a smoking ban that was set to take effect in bars and restaurants in Lexington, the hub of tobacco-growing country.
The justices also said they would settle an appeal by opponents of a trial judge’s ruling that the law was constitutional.
Earlier, a state appeals court refused to grant a temporary injunction.
Judges said foes of the ordinance failed to show how immediate enforcement would cause them “irreparable injury.”
