Living Wage Plan Approved by Council
The City Council gave final approval Tuesday to adopting a living wage plan.
It voted 6 to 2 in favor of the ordinance after nearly three years of effort by living wage advocates.
The ordinance applies to employees of private firms that contract with the city and employees of municipally subsidized projects, along with full-time city employees.
If a company contracting with the city does not provide health insurance, it must increase the hourly wage to $10.50 an hour.
The ordinance applies to companies with 25 or more full-time employees.
Nonprofit corporations with 100 or fewer employees would be exempt.
City officials estimated the ordinance would cost private business $1.7 million a year, with 40% to 60% of that passed on to the city.
