Hindu-Muslim Clashes Leave 6 Dead in India

HYDERABAD, India — Six people died in the southern India city of Hyderabad on Saturday after clashes between jubilant Hindu hard-liners and protesting Muslims on the 11th anniversary of the razing of a mosque, police said.
Twenty-four people were hurt in the incident late Saturday, 12 suffering gunshot wounds as police opened fire to control rampaging mobs in areas where Muslims are a majority.
“Indefinite curfew has been imposed in several areas of the city after the rioting, but there has been no violence since 1 a.m.,” police official A.K. Khan said. “The situation is tense but under control.”
On Dec. 6, 1992, Hindu zealots destroyed the 16th century Babri mosque in the northern town of Ayodhya; ensuing riots killed more than 2,000 people. The incident has become volatile to Hindu-Muslim relations, leading to periodic violence.
