Bob Tway and Lee Janzen are in position to win the BellSouth Classic at Duluth, Ga., after finishing the second round tied at eight-under-par 136 Friday in the final tuneup before the Masters.

Tway overcame a three-stroke deficit by shooting the lowest score of the day, a six-under 66 that included four straight birdies. Janzen shot a five-under 67 that included an eagle on the 13th hole.

Defending champion Retief Goosen shot a 70 and is second at six-under 138.

Phil Mickelson, playing in his first tournament after taking a month off for the birth of his third child, shot 79 and missed the cut by six shots.

Jeremy Mayfield won his first pole in more than two years, qualifying his Dodge at 186.489 mph at Talladega Superspeedway in Talladega, Ala.

Dale Earnhardt Jr., who has won the last three races on the 2.66-mile oval, qualified 13th in his Chevrolet for Sunday’s NASCAR Winston Cup Series Aaron’s 499.Kevin Harvick was second in a Chevrolet at 186.166. followed by the Ford of Elliott Sadler at 186.047. Jeff Gordon’s Chevrolet was fifth at 186.021.

Mark Webber became the first Jaguar driver to turn the fastest lap in Formula One qualifying, finishing ahead of Ferrari’s Rubens Barrichello in the first round of qualifying in the Brazilian Grand Prix at Sao Paulo.

Webber, who started his Formula One career last year, had a time of 1:23.11. Barrichello was second in 1:23.249. Qualifying continues today for Sunday’s race.

Suzukis had the best of it at California Speedway in Fontana as Mat Mladin rode his new white and blue Yoshimura R1000 to a track-record 97.271 mph, with Aaron Yates close behind on another R1000.

The old record was 97.126 mph by Anthony Gobert, set last year.

The makeup of the field for the 100-kilometer Chevy Trucks U.S. Superbike championship races today and Sunday will not be set, however, until after another qualifying session this morning. The races are 28 laps on a 2.3-mile road course.

Defending champion Russia lost the first two matches against Argentina in a Davis Cup World Group quarterfinal.

David Nalbandian and Gaston Gaudio both won in straight sets on the red clay in Buenos Aires for a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series.

Nalbandian defeated Nikolay Davydenko, 6-2, 6-2, 7-5, and Gaudio upset Yevgeny Kafelnikov, 6-4, 6-0, 6-2. Nalbandian will team with Lucas Arnold to try to clinch a semifinal berth by beating Kafelnikov and Marat Safin in today’s doubles match.

In the other World Group matches, Australia leads Sweden, 2-0, Spain leads Croatia, 2-0, and France and Switzerland are tied, 1-1.

In Malmo, Sweden, top-ranked Lleyton Hewitt defeated Thomas Enqvist, 6-4, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4, and Mark Philippoussis beat Jonas Bjorkman, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3.

In Valencia, Spain, Juan Carlos Ferrero defeated Mario Ancic, 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 (1), and Carlos Moya beat Ivan Ljubicic, 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-4, 6-4.

In Toulouse, France, Sebastien Grosjean beat Georg Bastl, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, before Roger Federer tied the match by defeating Nicolas Escude, 6-4, 7-5, 6-2.

Nathalie Dechy defeated Ansley Cargill, a former Duke All-American, 6-3, 6-4, to advance to the semifinals of the $140,000 Sarasota Clay Court Classic at Sarasota, Fla. Dechy will play Anastasia Myskina, who defeated Russia’s Elena Dementieva, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.

Alicia Molik of Australia and Iva Majoli of Croatia also advanced to the semifinals.

Italians Rita Grande and Antonella Serra Zanetti will meet in today’s final of the Grand Prix de Sar tournament at Casablanca, Morocco. Grande beat Marta Marrero of Spain, 6-7 (6), 7-5, 6-3. Serra Zanetti defeated Ludmila Cervanova of Slovakia, 6-4, 6-2.

Miscellany

Lindsay Benko, an Olympian and Indiana native, led all the way and won the women’s 400-meter freestyle in 4 minutes, 11.34 seconds in the U.S. National Spring Swimming Championships at Indianapolis.

It was Benko’s ninth national title.

Klete Keller, the 2002 Olympic bronze medalist and American record holder, overtook early leader Chad Carvin after 300 meters and swam away from the field, winning the men’s 400 in 3:48.15. Erik Vendt of USC was third and Carvin faded to fourth.

Michael Phelps, the 17-year-old from North Baltimore, won his third championship in as many days by taking the 100 breaststroke in 51.89 seconds, just one-hundredth of a second off his American record.

Misty Hyman won her 12th national title by winning the women’s 100 butterfly in 59.74.

The Chicago Rush (4-6) converted two turnovers by the Detroit Fury (5-5) into 14 points in the final 30 seconds of the first half and never gave up the lead in a 62-45 Arena Football League victory at Auburn Hills, Mich.

Mike Collins, the new football coach at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, resigned after he was arrested and charged with drunk driving after he smashed his pickup truck into a house in Monroe, La.

Collins was arrested early Friday morning, Monroe Police Chief Joe Stewart said. No one was injured in the wreck, but it caused an estimated $50,000 in damage to the house.

UCLA tight end Keith Carter was injured in a motorcycle accident Thursday night and will sit out spring practice.

Carter, who will be a sophomore, collided with a car on the 405 Freeway during a lane change and suffered a dislocated left hip and cuts on his legs. Surgery was planned either Friday night or today to remove bone fragments from the hip.

Carter, who started three games last season, is expected to make a full recovery, although it is uncertain whether he will be ready for fall training camp.

The San Jose Earthquakes announced that forward Dwayne De Rosario has suffered a torn lateral collateral ligament in his right knee. He is expected to be sidelined for the entire MLS season.
