Fears of Attack Prompt Removal of Church Signs

Fearing new attacks, Pakistani police removed signs identifying churches set up in private homes and fortified other Christian sites with sandbag bunkers.

The measures came after police found weapons, explosives and maps of two churches and a Christian school--all in the southern city of Karachi--during the arrest of two suspected Islamic militants, Interior Ministry officials said.

Some Christian officials suggested that the removal of the signs was really designed to lower the visibility of non-Muslims. “The authorities just want to hide the worship places of Christians,†said Shahbaz Bhatti of the All-Pakistan Minorities Alliance.
