Tiger Attacks Boy After Exhibition at Private School

A tiger being exhibited at a private school in Scotts Valley suddenly sprang into a seating area and bit a 6-year-old student in the head Friday, police said.
The unidentified boy was airlifted to Stanford Medical Center, where he was treated for a gash on his scalp and held overnight for observation.
Authorities said the tiger and other animals had been taken to the auditorium at Baymonte Christian School in Scotts Valley, near Santa Cruz, as a reward for students who had sold magazine subscriptions.
The year-old tiger, which was on a leash, leaped at the boy as the animal’s handler was leading it out of the auditorium, police said.
The handler and the school’s principal, Steve Patterson, immediately pulled the animal off the boy, Scotts Valley Police Capt. Harry Bidleman said.
