* U.S. retail gasoline prices rose 0.6 cent to $1.40 a gallon in the week ended Monday, the Department of Energy reported. The rise in the nationwide average cost of regular gasoline left prices 12.8 cents less than a year ago, the weekly survey of 900 filling stations showed. Regular gasoline prices were highest on the West Coast, where they fell 0.7 cent to $1.52 a gallon.
* WorldCom Inc. said it will cut 2,000 jobs, or a quarter of its work force in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, as the U.S. telecommunications company tries to make its overseas operations profitable by paring costs.
* Toyota Motor Corp. will hire 700 people at a plant in Cambridge, Canada, to lift output to 250,000 cars a year as the world’s third-largest auto maker adds North American capacity because of sales gains. The 14% production increase, to be completed by the end of next year, follows a previously announced expansion to 220,000 vehicles from 200,000 at the factory.
