Breeders’ Favorite Is Retired
One of the perils of future betting was made apparent again earlier this week. Street Cry, the favorite for the Breeders’ Cup Classic which will be run Oct. 26 at Arlington Park near Chicago, was retired because of a problem in his right front ankle, so all of those who bet on him in recent months are out of luck.
Street Cry, the 4-year-old son of Machiavellian who is owned by Sheikh Mohammed al Maktoum’s Godolphin Racing, was scheduled to make his next start in the Jockey Club Gold Cup on Sept. 28 at Belmont.
Second behind Left Bank, who has also since been retired after a near-fatal bout with colic, in the Whitney on Aug. 3 at Saratoga, Street Cry earned his biggest win in the $6-million Dubai World Cup this year.
Trained by Saeed bin Suroor, Street Cry finishes his career with five wins, six seconds and a third in 12 starts and earnings of more than $5.15 million.
