Official Found Dead After Denouncing Attack

A lawmaker in the Russian republic of Ingushetia, which borders Chechnya, was found shot to death in his car in the village of Surkha- khi, police said. Magomed-Bashir Aushev’s driver also was slain.
Aushev was a pro-Russian member of Ingushetia’s regional assembly. Two days before his death, in comments broadcast on local television, he denounced a recent attack by Chechen rebels on the Ingush village of Galashki. The attack left 17 Russian soldiers and dozens of rebels dead, according to Russian officials.
