Sony, AT&T; in Cell Phone Deal
Sony Pictures Digital and AT&T; Wireless Services Inc. announced a joint venture that will let cell phone customers download video clips, ring tones, games and computer wallpaper from more than a dozen Sony movies and TV shows.
The deal, which includes content from such recent hits as “XXX†and “Stuart Little 2,†is part of a wave of content agreements between phone companies and Hollywood studios. Wireless companies that have spent billions upgrading their networks are looking for ways to sell more services through their expanded pipelines.
So far, Disney has lined up deals with AT&T; and Sprint PCS to provide Disney-themed games, graphics and ring tones to cell phone users from the U.S. to Japan. And Sony Corp.’s Columbia Pictures has developed relationships with Cingular Wireless and Sprint PCS to promote such movies as “Spider-Man†and “Men in Black 2.â€
Financial details of the deal between AT&T; and Sony Pictures Digital, a unit of Sony Pictures Entertainment, were not disclosed.
