Truckers Block Roads After Pay Talks Fail

Truckers erected road blockades across France early today, threatening the nation with transport paralysis after wage talks between employers and major unions collapsed.
The government warned it would act to prevent a repeat of bitter conflicts in the 1990s that crippled key industries and disrupted trade. Police were deployed to protect border crossings and industrial sites.
Road-watch groups reported about 10 blockades early today, including near Le Havre, Lille and Caen. Organizers said 80 blockades are planned.
