Sony Music Buys Wireless Company
Hoping to boost its presence on cell phones and other mobile devices, Sony Music Entertainment announced that it has acquired Run Tones Inc., a privately held company developing wireless entertainment technology. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The advent of higher-capacity wireless networks and more sophisticated cell phones has prompted many major record companies and Hollywood studios to experiment with wireless services.
Sony Music’s goal with the Run Tones acquisition is to gain core technologies and expand its wireless efforts, said Thomas Gewecke, senior vice president of Sony Music Digital Services.
Run Tones, based in New York, provides ring tones, digital photos and Web navigation tools for consumers, as well as mobile media production services for businesses.
