Raphael sues National Enquirer
Television personality Sally Jessy Raphael on Tuesday filed a libel lawsuit against the National Enquirer, alleging the tabloid falsely reported she had suffered a mental breakdown after her long-running talk show was canceled.
The lawsuit, filed in Manhattan federal court, asked for punitive damages exceeding $100 million from the National Enquirer and its parent, American Media Operations. The suit stemmed from a story in the Oct. 22 issue that said the 59-year-old former host received recent treatment in a clinic at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan.
American Media stood behind the story’s accuracy.
