Contaminated Water Kills 1, Sickens 1,200
From Times Wire Reports
One child has died and nearly 1,200 have fallen ill in Ecuador after drinking water contaminated by cow manure from farm runoff.
Hospital officials in Ibarra, 50 miles north of the capital, Quito, said they have been treating people for diarrhea, vomiting and dehydration. A 2-year-old died, officials said.
The water was contaminated when water tainted with cow manure penetrated a broken drinking water pipeline, a state water utility official said.
