Glavine Glad for the Help

MONTREAL — Andruw Jones made a sensational diving catch for the final out as Tom Glavine pitched a four-hitter for his 22nd shutout to lead the Atlanta Braves to a 2-0 win over the Montreal Expos on Wednesday night.

“He does something virtually every night to make everyone marvel at how good he is,” Glavine said.

Glavine (7-2) retired nine in a row before Vladimir Guerrero’s two-out single in the ninth. After Guerrero took second on defensive indifference, Wil Cordero hit a drive to deep left-center.

“I was praying for that ball to come down because I knew if it stayed up he would find a way to get it,” Cordero said.

Cordero had no such luck as Jones ran the ball down, making a diving catch just above the turf to end the game.

“When he hit it, I thought it was a double,” Glavine said. “He made an unbelievable catch.”

Glavine, whose last complete game was a seven-hit shutout here Sept. 3, lowered his earned-run average from 1.89 to an NL-leading 1.67.

Brave right fielder Gary Sheffield left the game in the fourth inning after he pulled his left hamstring while running out a grounder.

Sheffield will be examined by team medical staff in Atlanta on Thursday.

“When I reached for the ball, I felt it a little bit, but once I started running full-speed I felt it more so I kind of slowed down and protected it,” Sheffield said.
