A House committee approved a plan to sell the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints an area in the Wyoming highlands where nearly 150 Mormons died during a blizzard in 1856, after scaling back the proposal at the insistence of opponents.
Opposition from Wyoming residents and Rep. Barbara Cubin (R-Wyo.) led the House Resources Committee to remove 700 acres from the proposed Martin’s Cove sale and include language ordering the church to give the public free, unrestricted access to the area.
Cubin cast the lone vote against moving the bill to the House for consideration.
