American troops on a counterterrorism exercise treated 13 Philippine soldiers injured in a road accident on their way to fight Muslim extremist rebels on Basilan island, a Philippine military official said.
Col. Alexander Aleo, who heads a brigade in Basilan’s capital, Isabela, said U.S. soldiers provided first aid at an army camp there after a truck carrying about 30 Philippine soldiers on a mission to fight Abu Sayyaf rebels crashed Saturday in the city’s outskirts.
The driver apparently had lost control of the vehicle, Aleo said.
Nine of the injured were flown to a military hospital in Zamboanga, he said.
