Engine Damage Caused Flight to Return to LAX

Engine damage apparently caused the shaking that prompted the crew of an Alaska Airlines jet to return to Los Angeles International Airport earlier this week, the airline said Friday.
Jack Evans, a spokesman for the airline, said an examination of the plane revealed compressor blade damage in one of the MD-80’s two engines.
What caused the damage has not yet been determined, Evans said.
Flight 212 was en route from Los Angeles to Mazatlan, Mexico, Wednesday with 88 people on board when “a series of shudders” shook the MD-80 shortly after the plane crossed the border into Mexico.
The jetliner returned to LAX without incident, and the passengers were transferred to other flights. The damaged engine has been replaced, and the plane has been returned to service, Evans said.
The airline initially had reported erroneously that Flight 212 had originated in Long Beach.
