L.A. Unified Facing Even Deeper Budget Cuts

The Los Angeles Unified School District’s deficit has grown by nearly $14 million because of state budget cuts, the district’s chief financial officer reported Thursday.
The district now must slash about $440 million from its $5.2-billion general fund to balance its books this year.
The school board already has trimmed $384.6 million by increasing class sizes in most grades and reducing funding for counselors, nurses and assistant principals, among other cuts.
The board had anticipated $42 million in additional cuts, but that figure grew to $56 million after Gov. Gray Davis released his revised state budget this week.
