Re your May 10 obituary about UCLA professor Beverly Robinson: Her expertise in folklore and her academic accomplishments are extremely impressive, but it was her teaching that had an impact on the lives of countless students. I took her course, History of Black People’s Theater in America, in 1985.
Professor Robinson rarely asked us to discuss our assigned reading. Instead, she challenged us to explore our own perceptions and ideas. Our class conversations made me eager to attend each class and compelled me to show up during her office hours to further our discussions. Her teaching gave me a better understanding of black theater, but even more important, a greater appreciation for American culture.
