Ashcroft Affirms the Right to Bear Arms
Well, thank you, Atty. Gen. John Ashcroft, for making the Justice Department’s position on the individual’s right to own guns agree with the Constitution (“U.S. Backs a Right to Bear Arms,” May 8). It is just a silly argument that the 1st and 3rd through 10th amendments confer rights to individual citizens but the 2nd Amendment applies only to militias. The people are, after all, the people.
By the way, a pro-gun civil rights group has petitioned the attorney general to enforce federal civil rights laws in California and enter the courts against California’s gun laws. This could be fun.
