N. Calif. Rattled by Offshore Quakes
A swarm of mild earthquakes continued over the weekend off the coast of Humboldt County in Northern California, with 15 quakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater between Friday night and Monday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. The strongest registered a magnitude of 4.3.
The quakes were centered five to 14 miles offshore in the Pacific and most were about 40 miles southwest of Eureka. No damage or injuries were reported.
The seismic activity is occurring in a region that has many earthquakes.
It is in the so-called triple junction area where the northern end of the San Andreas fault intersects two tectonic plate boundaries, the North American and the Gorda.
