Planning Moves Ahead for Federal Prison

Federal officials said they are continuing with plans to build a high-security men’s penitentiary in this Central Valley town after plans for several immigrant holding cells were dropped.
Plans for 11 facilities in Arizona and California were tabled because of the decline in immigrants arrested for criminal offenses.
Mayor Joseph Riofrio said city officials hope to land the 1,000-bed prison, which could pump $47 million a year into the local economy and create 1,300 jobs.
