No Justice on Death Row

When we consider the case of DeWayne McKinney, released after spending 19 years in prison for a murder he did not commit, it is important to remember that McKinney was convicted in a fair trial and was represented by competent attorneys (“A Freed Lifer Just Lets It Go,” March 9).
Had McKinney been executed, as the prosecutors in his case demanded, his innocence would never have been discovered and he would just be one of the hundreds of people put to death in the United States since 1976, like the thousands now on death row, who we “know” are guilty.
Even at its best, our judicial system has convicted and will continue to convict innocent people. The death penalty has no place in such a system.
