What: “Quotable Wooden”
Author: John Reger
Publisher: TowleHouse Publishing, Nashville.
Price: $14.95
John Wooden, the former UCLA basketball coach, is considered one of the greatest in all of sports. He is also considered one of the most quotable, and his quotes get a G-rating.
This 6-inchx7-inch, 133-page hardcover book is a compilation of Wooden’s quotes.
John Reger, a Southern California writer who has covered UCLA for several publications, points out that although he is given author’s credit, the only words he wrote were for the preface. The rest are all quotes, mostly from Wooden.
Here’s a sampling:
* “It’s what you learn after you know it all that counts.”
* “Don’t let making a living prevent you from making a life.”
* “The time to make friends is before you need them.”
* “If one of my players did a 360 dunk, he would be off the court before his feet hit the floor.”
* “Discipline yourself and others won’t have to.”
* “Sports do not build character. They reveal it.”
In the book’s appendix, pages 107-133, is Wooden’s game-by-game coaching record at UCLA.
