Big Bad Bailout
Re “United Airlines Asks for $1.8-Billion Loan Backing,†June 25: The correct answer to United Airlines’ request to prop up its failing business with massive taxpayer-supported guaranteed loans? No, no and again no. Get away from the trough! The last time I looked this was a vigorously competitive capitalist society. United wants to circumvent this system with huge bailouts--using the facade of Sept. 11 as an excuse for its horrendous management.
There was never a reason to bail out any of the airlines immediately after Sept. 11, as their insolent, uncaring attitudes on proper passenger screening and security directly contributed to the tragedy. There’s even less reason today. United Airlines is a poorly run, dispensable business that deserves to reap what it has sown.
