Catholics, Police Clash After Protestant March
Roman Catholics clashed with Belfast police after a controversial march by pro-British Protestants.
Police in Northern Ireland used water cannons against about 300 Catholics who pelted them with stones, bottles, paint and fireworks. The riot flared after the Protestant Orange Order paraded near the Catholic Ballymurphy area.
Violence in Belfast has escalated in recent weeks to levels not seen in years. Alan McQuillan, Belfast’s assistant chief constable, described the scenes as “disgraceful” and appealed to leaders on both sides to try to calm the situation.
