A 3-year-old boy died and a 2-year-old boy was in critical condition Wednesday after separate pool accidents in Anaheim.

Asuel Chavez died after he walked out a bathroom door that led to the pool deck at his home in the 200 block of North Vine Street, officials said. Asuel was being watched by his grandmothers while his mother was at work and his father, who works at night, was asleep. The father, awakened by screams, pulled his son from the pool.

Police and firefighters responded within four minutes of the 2:17 p.m. call and performed CPR. But the boy never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead at Western Medical Center-Anaheim, Fire Department spokeswoman Maria Sabol said.

Three hours later, 2-year-old Joshua Taylor was pulled from his family’s pool in the 2100 block of West Chateau Avenue, Sabol said. The boy was last seen napping with his parents.

The boy’s father and 12-year-old brother found him in the murky pool, Sabol said. Joshua was taken to Western Medical Center where he was listed in critical condition.

Neither pool had a barrier around it, officials said.
