Boys’ Soccer Coach at Los Alamitos Resigns
Coach Trey Scharlin, who guided Los Alamitos to the Southern Section Division II boys’ soccer title this season, has resigned to pursue other coaching opportunities.
Scharlin, 32, will have increased responsibilities during his second season as an assistant coach for the Long Beach City College men’s team during the 2002-03 year and he recently was hired as the director of coaching for the Beach Soccer Club in Los Alamitos.
“It was a very difficult decision,” Scharlin said about stepping down after his fourth year at Los Alamitos, which finished 27-1-1 and was ranked third in Student Sports magazine’s final national poll for the winter.
In other personnel moves:
* Ray Rivera, pitching coach at City Section runner-up Sylmar, has been promoted to varsity baseball coach. He replaces Gary Donatella, who retired.
* Phil White has resigned as baseball coach at Oxnard, where his teams were 41-39 in three seasons, to teach at his alma mater, Oxnard Rio Mesa.
